The day I realized the expressive potential of painting, I put down the guitar for awhile and started painting almost constantly. I remember it was around the time that Las Vegas’ First Friday event featured artists that would live paint onto these BIG wooden canvas. The canvas would remain there until the next month/round of artists, and traffic driving down Charleston would inevitably turn them into these interesting billboards for passerby’s to take in; consciously or subconsciously. Making something from scratch, then painting something from scratch while interacting with so many people that attend the FF festival; that kind of energy was put into these works & I think I understood how powerful art could be as a medium.
Growing tired of the music scene, likely because of our venues primarily being bars, I began to delve into painting with whatever I could find. I lived in the Arts District at the time and it was easy to take a walk at night and simply find things to paint on, whether a brickwall or actual pieces of wood to use as canvas. My apartment quickly filled up with vibrant artwork made on pieces of wood. Different thickness, height/width & the condition of the canvas made my collection quite interesting, and I decided it’d be a good idea to try and have an art show with my new work and genre.
My band Wax Pig Melting had one last EP to record and release, entitled “W/OUND”. I funded W/OUND’s recording sessions by way of selling the works, and on opening night, I’d have Brendan Scholz of Mercy Music & Illicitor play acoustic sets, which was beyond an honor for my younger self.
I was very proud of fusing both visual art and music together, and I believe this trend continues in my work, to this very day. Until then, here are some notable pictures from the last 3 years or so.
