ARTIST AWARDS & RESIDENCY EXPERIENCES Nevada Arts Council FY23 Project Grant for Artists I was awarded a project grant which will allow me to curate three sound artists from Las Vegas to join me in traveling to Rhyolite, NV and documenting a series of live performances that will serve as performance art works in dialogue with the desert environment provided by the non profit organization Goldwell Open Air Museum. I will be documenting these performances as they happen throughout March – May 2023. Artist Residency with INSIDE STYLE / The Ableman’s, November 2022 For the month of November I was offered the unique opportunity of taking over a storefront on Main & Charleston, in the heart of the Arts District, connected to the Interior Design firm “INSIDE STYLE”. I was able to recap the entire year of art opportunities into one month of operating an art gallery. I curated, installed, priced and marketed the exhibition, including a show opening held on the First Friday of the month. During the month I was open in this location, I was able to procure 4 different reviews of the exhibition, ranging from the student paper at UNLV to the Las Vegas Weekly, and more. This experience taught me first hand what operating a gallery is like. I discovered which days of the week are best for scheduling open gallery hours, what pricing system works for my particular genre of artworks, how to design a room to make it feel more inviting, how to procure emails and contact information from gallery visitors, and how to properly install and return a gallery space to the owner the way I had received it. This was easily the most dense of each opportunity, and perhaps the one I would like to make happen again. I sincerely enjoyed interacting with the public and sharing my unique take on Contemporary Abstract Artwork with strangers. Artist Residency with Modern Art Concepts / Deana Khoshoba, Sep. – Oct. 2022 One of my few peers in the limited Abstract Expressionist scene in Las Vegas, NV, Deana Khoshoba, invited me to paint in her studio, located in New Orleans Sqare, for 3 weeks. During this period I was taught how to properly use oil paints, professionally stretch and prime canvas, and to properly clean and maintain brushes and tools I would use in the studio daily. It was amazing to get such an in depth crash course in Deana’s way of approaching Abstract Expressionist painting. Artist Residency with The Cube Design Group, May – August 2022 I was awarded the opportunity to view contemporary art museums/exhibitions in London, Athens, Italy and finally; Berlin, Germany. In Berlin I was able to experiment with video art as a new medium. During this time I was also given a space to create in a private art studio located in Calico Basin, isolated from the spiritual filth and general noisiness of the inner city. Upon returning from Europe, I was able to create a body of work exploring the unabashed aesthetic that almost every inch of East Berlin displayed so effortlessly, eventually showcasing the works in the DTLV Art’s District at The Cube Gallery in August, 2022. Nevada State Art Council Artist Spotlight, 2022 The Nevada State Arts Council has asked me to document myself in my day to day life for their social media accounts. They reached out on account of my social media habits being consistent and I will speak to Saphira C., a member of the board.American Rescue Plan Grant for Individual Artists, 2022 I was awarded grant money towards successfully completing the body of work I have created since the end of my Artist Residency experience at Core Contemporary. The large scale artworks I have made in the last year are all unstretched, without frames or any kind of finish work. This grant will fund the completion of “Cognitive Distortion/s”, as I will be able to immerse myself in the experience of learning how to leave a work of art with a professional appearance. MIGRATE: Wetlands Temporary Public Art Installation, 2022 In January 2022 I was selected as 1 of 10 artists to install a temporary public art installation in the second annual event of it’s kind. My work included not only visual art/painting, but woodworking, as well as poetry to convey the concept of Migration for the event. The works will be on display from March – April, 2022. This opportunity grants me $1,000 for successful install and de-install. Core Arts Concord Artist In Residency, 2021 In March of 2021 I was contacted by the board that I was chosen as CACI’s 1st Artist In Residency. I originally applied to have the possibility to work on large scale artworks in a legitimate setting. This was my first and only experience with a residency, and all I can say about it is it has opened up an entire new world of opportunities for me, as well as some new lens in which to view them. It has also seemed to increase my want to work on a large scale, even more so! | |
Exhibition/Showing History:“Southwest Scapes”, March, 2022, Charleston Heights Arts Center My frequent collaborator, Mike Martin and I, submitted our work, “A City W/ A Skyline”, to the juried group exhibition at the beginning of 2022. Our work was accepted. We were very proud to be part of this beautiful group of works depicting the Southwest and it’s various subtle charms. “Chinese Heritage Year Of The Water Tiger Group Exhibition” February, 2022, Historic Fifth Street Elementary School My first experience submitting for a group exhibit. My work, “Tiger, Sans Stripes”, was included with about 30 other artists, many of which I have know and respected for a number of years. It was an honor to show at this historical venue, and hopefully the first of many more experiences like it. “Let The Critics Plant Their Flags” August 2019, Writer’s Block An exhibition hosted by Writer’s Block in Downtown Las Vegas. A collaborative work based on Norman’s poem of the same name. The work consisted of 6 unique handmade wooden panels with unstretched canvas paintings including both original art and poetry from the two of us. “Cognitive Distortion/s” June 2021, Peace | Art | Studio My first attempt at combining both Visual & Audio Interpretations of a single concept, with collaborator William Davenport. Using automation in the programming of my guitar, I was able to take a single repeating phrase of sound, then increase or decrease the amount of delay, reverb, delay, and modifications in general as time went on. The result of a repeated musical phrase w/added delay is quite disorienting in an interesting way; it was my aim to represent the positive and negative aspects of applying “cognitive distortions” to our own repeated phrases/thoughts/beliefs, and “familiar’s”. If we stick with “the familiars” in our lives, it is usually just about white noise after a short while. Which can either be a comforting tone we can tune into, or a repulsive screaming that would probably best be to be reconsidered as necessary or not in our headspace/line of (mental) sight. “Abrasion Is Love” February 2019, Prickly Pear Marketing An exhibit including both artworks and the debut of the DIY physical copies made of the prose poetry collection, curated with an interest in featuring writers across the U.S. “Right, You Are” December 2015, Wasteland Gallery A collection of early works made in my first year of painting. Featured live noise music from Headwinds, CHINA, and Ultra Witch. |
