I made this work, “Red Day At Nordstrom”, in 2018 while I was working at the Fashion Show Mall. We were remodeling all 3 floors of Nordstrom’s portion of the mall, and they had a large dumpster I would often have to visit on the outside of the job. This dumpster also had jewelry backing boards, hangars and various other trash.
The backing boards proved useful as small canvas though and as I began to collect them at work and use them at home for that very purpose it also prompted me to use different tools than usual. Painting on a small surface can be very different and unfamiliar, making it a different type of endeavor to approach than the usual normal sized canvas.
This piece was about 6″ x 6″, pretty small by my standards these days. This smaller work had a pretty big outcome, though, as mark making would eventually become a primary technique I use when approaching larger canvas.
That being said…

hanging in my 2022 exhibit “Automatische Narr”.
Even though the original painting was small, it would be in 2021 that I would meet a woman who ended up producing a series of 4 giclee prints; all stretched and 60″ x 60″. They are gorgeous!
Their size almost commands the room in a subtle and gentle way. The sheer visual portrayal of improvisational mark making makes the series of embellished giclees my favorite works to date.
