PRESS RELEASE
“AUTOMATISCHE NARR”
(Automatic Fool)
A brand new solo exhibition for Brian C. Gibson’s most recent Visual Artworks.
Access to foreign art scenes is a privilege not many outsider artists have the luxury to experience. I have been granted a three month Artist Residency by The Cube which in turn, allowed me the materials, space & time needed to challenge and advance my art through the lens of my experience with the Berlin arts scene; one that proves itself intrinsically different from the general sense of malaise in the retail driven world the Las Vegas art scene seems to live in.
With this new body of work, I aim to bridge the gap between German Abstract-Expressionism and the general experiences of Las Vegas natives, emphasizing the grimier counterparts that often take a back seat to the usual decorative art, often placed at the forefront of one’s first impression when encountering our city. I’d like to continue exploring new ways of dignifying the underbelly of Las Vegas and where I fit into the international art world, as well.
In contrast to the focused and figurative artwork easily found in Las Vegas, the loose, raw & uninhibited qualities of Automatism are often unfairly critiqued as “foolish” and “naïve”; though these are precisely the qualities I have found myself inevitably drawn to, from a seemingly subconscious level.
Improvisational experimentation and collaboration is openly celebrated by Berlin, not as an action resulting from freedom, but an action towards freedom. These qualities can be found, front and center, in my newest series of Abstract Expressionist works, “Automatishe Narr”, meaning “Automatic Fool”.
Berlin has proved to have had a significant impact on me. During my stay I found myself able to create the audio/visual release, “CIA Listening Station in Germany”, with video from Teufelsberg, Germany.
Starting August 6th, 2022, inside The Cube LV (located in between Berlin Bar & Bungalow Coffee in the DTLV Arts District) is a new body of large-scale abstract expressionist works that were created upon returning from Europe.
